Department profile
Since 1964, the Department of Tourism at the Faculty of Economics of Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica has been educating young people involved in the development of tourism in Slovakia and abroad. It is the oldest and most prestigious university school focusing on tourism in Slovakia. The quality of study and scientific research at the department was also appreciated by the World Tourism Organization UNWTO. The study program Economy and Management of Tourism in the engineering degree of study is certified by the UNWTO Tedqual scheme (10 May 2019 to 9 May 2022), which represents an exceptional success in the geographical area of the V4 countries. The study of tourism at the Department of Tourism also enables graduates to obtain a double degree in tourism in cooperation with prestigious Katholische Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt in Germany. It is a unique opportunity to obtain such a diploma in the conditions of Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Through its members, the department is active in several international organizations, of which the most important are AIEST (The International Association of Scientific Experts in Tourism) and IFITT (International Federation for IT and Travel). At the same time, the department is a member of ATLAS (The Association for Tourism and Leisure Education and Research) and the TRIANGLE Knowledge Alliance.
