The origins of the Faculty date back to 1964 when the Bratislava School of Economics opened its consulting centre in Banská Bystrica. Later, in 1973, it was turned to an affiliate branch of the Faculty of Commerce of the Bratislava School of Economics, and in 1977, to its fifth faculty - Faculty of the Economics of Services and Tourism. Its research and pedagogic orientation continued the tradition and experience of training specialists in tourism and catering. Besides this traditional orientation of the study, the needs of the society were gradually creating the conditions for establishing new fields of study aimed at services, which led to a broadening of the profile of the graduates.
At the turn of the 1990s, the Faculty made profound changes in the quality of the offered higher education programmes in economics to reflect new requirements of the labour market due to the transformation of the economy to a market economy and its opening to the world. On 1 July 1992, the school under a new name - Faculty of Economics, together with the Faculty of Education became the founders of Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica.
For the years of its existence the Faculty has undergone significant conceptual changes, which meant progressiveness and creativity. On the basis of the results of accreditation and evaluation and higher demand for study than supply the Faculty of Economics of Matej Bel University belongs to stabilized and fully-fledged higher education institutions in Slovakia. At present the Faculty has approximately 1,800 students.
